Project Overview
SmarterEPC is a Horizon Europe research and innovation project focused on transforming Energy Performance Certificates into dynamic, data-driven tools that support smarter, more sustainable buildings across Europe.
Working within an international consortium of research organisations, technology providers, and public stakeholders, I supported the project's communication and dissemination activities by translating highly technical content into clear, engaging, and accessible materials for diverse audiences.
The Challenge
Research projects often generate valuable technical knowledge, but communicating that knowledge consistently across consortium partners, stakeholders, policy makers, and the wider public can be challenging.
The project required communication materials that were:
- technically accurate
- visually engaging
- aligned with Horizon Europe dissemination requirements
- consistent across multiple deliverables and digital channels
My Role
Rather than acting solely as a designer, I worked across technical and visual communication activities, collaborating with researchers and project partners to transform complex engineering concepts into professional communication outputs.
Responsibilities included:
- Designing dissemination materials
- Developing project branding assets
- Creating brochures and factsheets
- Designing infographics and visual summaries
- Supporting website design and updates
- Producing presentation materials
- Structuring technical information for non-specialist audiences
- Supporting communication activities across project deliverables
Deliverables
- Primary logo design
- Secondary logo variations
- Brand color palette
- Typography system
- Business card design
- Social media post templates
- Cover/banner design
- Brand guideline presentation
- Mockups and visual brand applications
Design Approach
The branding direction focused on combining professionalism, simplicity, and strong visual recognition. The logo mark was designed using geometric shapes and clean typography to reflect stability, reliability, and the industrial nature of the business.
A balanced blue and orange color palette was selected to communicate trust, professionalism, energy, and visibility across different applications.
Special attention was given to creating a flexible identity system that works consistently across:
storefront branding
printed materials
social media
packaging
stationery
promotional visuals
Outcome
The final result delivered a modern and cohesive identity system that helped refresh the visual presence of ABU SA’DA Stores while maintaining the business’s established reputation and heritage within the local market.
